It's the most common thing parents tell us, and it's almost never about effort. Usually, it's one of these
Analysis that summarises the text, ignores the guiding question or runs out of time costs marks they could have earned.
They understand the texts, but lose marks analysing how language, structure and form create meaning in unseen non-literary texts.
Gaps in analytical vocabulary and knowledge of their studied works make the comparative essay and the Individual Oral much harder.
More tutoring hours won't solve the problem if you're working on the wrong things. That's why we start by finding out exactly what's holding your child back.
At Edmento, lessons start from £15 an hour. Across the UK, the cost of an IB English Language and Literature SL tutor depends on the tutor's experience, the level being taught, how much exam and Individual Oral support is involved and what support comes with the lessons.
1-to-1 lessons cost more than group tuition, but every minute goes on your child's gaps. You won't be asked to buy a large block of lessons before you know the tutor is right: start with the free consultation and a trial.

This is where the plan matters most. We rebuild the foundations first, close the biggest gaps and build steadily towards a secure pass.
Let’s find what’s standing between them and the top marks
Yes, because every lesson can focus on the exact areas costing your child marks, rather than following the pace and needs of a whole class.
Spend more time on the English they struggle with and less on what they already know.
Whether they’re working at a 3 or a 6, teaching starts from where they are now.
Apply each skill to the unseen analysis, comparative essay and Individual Oral they’ll actually face.
Spot where their analysis retells the text or their argument drifts before the same mistake happens again.
Get guidance on choosing a global issue, selecting extracts and structuring the Individual Oral.
Lessons focus on the skills and marks needed to move towards their target IB English Language and Literature SL grade.
Yes. Online IB English Language and Literature SL tutoring can be as effective as face-to-face when lessons are interactive. Your child's writing goes into a shared document the tutor annotates live, extracts and past papers go up on screen, and model paragraphs are built together.
At Edmento, lessons start from £15 an hour. Across the UK, IB English Language and Literature SL tutoring costs vary with the tutor's experience, the level and how much exam and Individual Oral support is included. We start with a free consultation and a trial lesson, with no large upfront package, so you can judge the value before committing.
It usually is when lessons target the specific reasons your child is losing marks. Every point counts towards the IB total out of 45 that university offers depend on, so closing gaps in English can make a real difference. The trial lesson lets you judge before committing.
As soon as you notice something slipping: a low predicted grade, a disappointing mock or confidence dropping. DP1 gives the most room to fix gaps properly, but DP2 students still make real progress with focused lessons, especially before predicted grades are set.
Once a week suits most students: enough to close gaps steadily and keep momentum alongside a busy IB workload. Some move to twice a week before mocks or the final exams. We'll suggest a frequency based on your child's starting point, target and time available.
It can, though no honest tutor guarantees a result. Progress comes from fixing the specific gaps and technique problems that cost marks, practising regularly and getting feedback. We track progress and share updates, so you can see whether it's working.
It depends on their strengths and university plans. Some courses require or prefer English at HL, while SL suits students who need the subject but want to focus their HL choices elsewhere. We can talk it through during the free consultation.
Usually because Paper 1 is unseen: students have to analyse an unfamiliar text, such as an advert, article or speech, in a limited time. Many summarise rather than analyse, or don't explain the effect of the writer's choices. Regular timed practice with feedback fixes this.
By practising a routine: read the text for purpose and audience, plan around the guiding question, then analyse specific features and their effects. Writing regular timed responses with detailed feedback shows exactly where marks slip.
Yes. Tutors can help your child choose a global issue, select strong extracts from a literary work and a non-literary body of work, structure their talk and practise answering questions. The oral must be your child's own, so we guide and give feedback rather than script it for them.
Lessons happen live, 1-to-1, over video. Your child's writing goes into a shared document the tutor annotates live, extracts and past papers go up on screen, and model paragraphs are built together. Your child needs a laptop or tablet and a quiet space; many families find it easier than travelling to lessons.
We match on subject, level (SL), your child's needs and their personality, and look for tutors who know the current IB syllabus and assessment. After the free assessment we suggest a tutor, and your child has a trial lesson so you can both judge the fit before committing.
Yes. You can receive lesson feedback and progress updates, and your Student Success Manager is available whenever you have a question or concern.
Tell your Student Success Manager and we'll find a better match. It happens occasionally, and it's easy to fix.
